It's a Griswold Family Christmas!

So if you've ever seen the movie Christmas Vacation with Chevy Chase (and i really hope you have since it's my all time favorite Christmas movie), last night was a Griswold night for us. We had picked out Thursday as the day to get our tree. well, i call mister studly in the morning and tell him that i have a cold and that i still want to get the tree, but i am not feeling too well so I'm not sure if i will be grumpy or not. he gets home and I'm taking a nap with the kids. when i wake up, i get dressed and we head out to get the tree. we went to target because we were also going to buy some shelves for our living room. well... here's how everything went down........ we got in a little tiff over the shelves because we couldn't agree on them. i give in but now I'm in a worse mood because he is getting his way and i am sick and tired and grumpy so it makes my attitude worse. then we go to get the tree. i tried to change my attitude so that we could have a fun family Christmas tree buying experience but i have to admit it was tough. next moma has to go to the rest room. mister studly takes her and when he comes back, he is upset now because she wouldn't go. she never goes with him in the stores for some reason. after awhile, she tells me she has to go. so this time i take her and guess what... she doesn't go with me either. so now I'm ticked because the restroom is on the opposite end of the target than the garden center where the trees are and it's just a hassle. we walk back out side to the trees and it takes us awhile for the guy to help us but he eventually just gives mister studly his box cutter so that we can open the trees ourselves. we aren't finding one that fits us very well but moma is running all over the place like a two year old maniac and thumper is starting to get fussy. so we find one that "will do" and buy it. we load it in the car and go home. we start to set it up. by now it is past bedtimes, but we're trying to have that "fun family night" that i mentioned. so the kids are starting to drive us nuts. we set up the tree and i get out the lights and start stringing them up not really caring what they look like. during this, the tree falls over! i couldn't grab it in time so it falls over against the wall and I'm seriously left holding one tiny little branch trying to keep it from sliding down the wall even more because that's all i could manage to get my hands on. because we both yelled when the tree fell over (and i cussed- it slipped out) moma starts crying hysterically saying "hold me! hold me!" because she got scared. so after mister studly gets a hold of the tree, i try to calm her down. we get the tree up again, which by the way... our tree is fat this year and so the tree stand is not sturdy enough for the stupid thing. so we get it up again and it looks like it will hold. we put the water in. just when it's completely filled with water, it falls over again, this time completely over onto the ground and the water spills everywhere onto the carpet. we always put a trash bag underneath so it was protected but it was still a huge mess. by now, we are just over it. moma starts hysterically crying again. it's getting late, i don't feel well. it's just a mess. so i grab her and take her to bed and thumper to bed. she thinks i am punishing her for crying by putting her to bed. i sit down on the bed with her and tell her that she's not in trouble, we're just mad about the tree and we'll have her decorate it tomorrow. i leave her to put thumper down and as soon as i put him down and shut off the light to go back in and tuck her in, i hear a loud thud come from her room. then a scream. i rush in there thinking "what now?!" and she has jumped on her bed and gotten her legs stuck in between the bed frame and the mattress. i have to push on the bed and yank her out. she is crying again (of course). she hit her knees on the wall next to the bed and so she has big red scraps/burns on her knees and then red marks on her thighs which look like they will bruise. i rub her legs, get her settled and put her down for bed. i go to help mister studly with the tree. he decides that he's just going to screw the bolts straight into the tree (all the way into the tree) so that it will hold it's place. so i keep the tree straight while he does this. during this, we hear a big "snap" he broke one of the bolts with his strong manliness and so we both just let out a big "sigh". it's still holding it up okay with the other bolts that didn't break. he tells me that if it falls over again he is "going to throw the whole thing straight in the dumpster and start again tomorrow". i say "duh!!" so we kind of push on the tree a bit to see if it's sturdy. i wiggle it and give it a few quick shoves. it's not budging. i go and sit down on the couch and start to open up some garland that i bought last year. i get a paper cut from the tag on it. not only is it a paper cut, but it's a cardboard paper cut which hurts really bad and not only that, but it cut me right in the center of where i was alreayd cut from a knife on sunday when i was chopping an onion. so i yell to mister studly "i just got a freaking paper cut inside of my cut!" he just laughs and so do i at this point. he asks me if the tree is straight. i say "nope it's leaning" so he tries to fix it, but i stop him and say "I'd rather have a leaning tree that stays up than a straight tree that falls over!" then we both just start hysterically cracking up. it was just one of those nights like what else could go wrong?? but more goes wrong..... we've already decided that we are in no mood to decorate the tree and we will save it until tomorrow so we can have a better time of it. he decides to put up one of the shelves. he drops the screw behind the couch. he finds it, tries again, he drops it behind the couch again. this time we can't see it so i get him the flash light. he thinks it went under the recliner part of the couch so he flips that part open but he can't find it. he crawls under neath the recliner and i go to the back of the couch again to see if i can find it. i end up pushing on the back of the chair which then squishes him under neath the thing because his head was still under there and it hurts him! we get the screw and put up the shelf. it looks nice but there are still four more shelves that need to go up. i decide that he doesn't need my help and i go to bed. I'm sick remember? so i go to bed. I'm up there kind of dozing in and out and i heard a loud bang. i figure that one of two things had happened... either he dropped a shelf or the tree fell over again. well... I'm too tired and comfy so i don't budge. i don't really care at this point. about an hour later he comes to bed and i wake up and ask him if he got it all done he says "didn't you hear me practically kill myself down there?" i said, "i heard something but i didn't know what it was" then he tells me that he was putting up the shelf while standing on the couch. he went to get down and took a step backwards but he ended up stepping right onto the baby's swing. so the swing like flips out from under him and he tries to get his balance but he's going down quick. he trips on another part of the swing with the other foot and sees that he's going to land on the tree. NOT THE TREE!!! so he makes a DIVE for it. He literally dives onto the ground getting rug burns on his elbows and his ankle is all bruised and bleeding. He says it hurt pretty bad but that he was okay. i couldn't hold it in, i just started laughing so hard. it was one of those laughs where i was shaking violently and no sound was coming out. that's how hard i was laughing. it was the craziest night ever.
we are going to try and decorate the stupid thing tonight when he gets home. i really hope that we can have a better time of it. that was just ridiculous!
and here's a great montage of my favorite movie............

I have tears coming out right now because I'm laughing so hard! That is so unreal! What made me laugh the most is your husband stepping in the swing and diving for the floor. That must have looked so hilarious! At the beginning, I kept thinking you guys would give up, but you kept going and going! So funny- thanks for sharing. PS I LOVE that movie so much!

Seriously! Each year I try to be all happy while the kids are grabbing all the ornaments and Carlo is gritting his teeth stringing the lights . . . I always imagine putting up our Christmas tree is going to be a magical family moment, but NEVER have we encountered your experiences! I think I shall tell Carlo so he can be thankful for our minimal mishaps (and laugh at Greg of course). :)
Merry Christmas!

I haven't laughed that hard in a while.... glad Greg did not land in the tree, I am afraid the tree would have been up in flames after that!!!
